Horror Movies

The screams are spread over the theater room, and meanwhile, the undeniable sounds of the audience's heartbeats project terror along with transitory shock. Indeed, we are all spellbound by the actors' and actress' reactions when they encounter an extraordinary or terrible circumstance. Nonetheless, a friend of mine told me, "It is insignificant to spend any money for more than one hour just under the torture of fear." Even so, horror movies will never go extinct as long as we still celebrate Halloween. There are three distinct kinds of horror movies--thrill, gore, and suspense. All three render an impressively eerie plot that interacts realistically with the audiences' senses as an exhibition of frightening aesthetics.

When we watch thrillers, our strong feelings of excitement or displeasure can rise and surge. Such kinds of movies emphasize a tight depiction as the principle thread running through the entire story. We are usually frightened with a series of unimaginable events rather than considerable violence or blood. For example, Scream (1996) and 1408 (2007) are two typical thrilling movies. In Scream, the process of how the murderer hunts and kills victims and how the quarries elude traps and find out the clues the murderer leaves behind are the main selling point. This is a well-constructed crime story, told with speed and punch. As for 1408, it is based on a supernatural theme. The climax is a ghostly manifestation haunting a hotel room numbered 1408, where lodgers never check out after they checked in. No matter what the setting is, there must be some startling or puzzling elements to continuously attract our interest and curiosity.

The second kind of move is more unacceptable than the other two because they are filled with bloodier scenes and atrocious plots where most audiences can be thunderstruck. The well-known gore movies such as the Saw series (2004-08) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) represent an extreme of brutal abuse as well as some eccentric behavior. It is indispensable that there is at least one insane or cold-blooded character, a human or a monster. There are accustomed to trapping and slaughtering substantial numbers of innocent sacrifices in the story. Therefore the the Motion Picture Association of America classifies most of these moves as R or NC-17. In other words, they often negatively influence children's mental and physical growth.

There is another choice of horror movies called suspense, which is for audiences that enjoy a slow and exquisite development. At the beginning, different incidents and premonitions usually happen in a specific sequence. Afterwards, all the situations become clearer and clearer with many subplots converging into the chief intrigue. At last, the astonishing and dramatic ending strikes a chord with the audience. For example, the move From Hell (2001), adapted from the real story of Jack the Ripper from the Whitechapel area of London in 1888, had a huge box-office success. Director Allen Hughes subtly formed a mysterious and gruesome atmosphere. Another movie, Sleepy Hollow (2000) is similarly comprised of a gradually revealed outrageous secret about headless corpses. In short, these kinds of movies rely on a thoughtful arrangement to bring audiences into a compelling ending.

Most people cannot resist their fascination of horror movies. Sometimes the movies can reflect our views and vent our stress. Nowadays taking advantage of special effects, horrors movies are able to be as vivid as science-fiction movies. More amazingly, the progressive make-up technique plays a key role in making us experience the horror. I am convinced that a new style of horror movies will soon prevail.

La Crosse Pizza Restaurants

There is no doubt that one of the most famous and delicious Italian dishes is pizza; therefore pizza has become one of the favorite meals for almost everyone. There is always a good excuse to buy or cook pizza, and the population of La Crosse is not the exception. The city of La Crosse has several options for pizza lovers. There are some places where you can buy pizza to go or some other places offer you a chance to sit and have a good time while you enjoy your favorite meal. It all depends on how much time you have or what the occasion is to find where you have to go or call to enjoy your favorite pizza. There are three options in La Crosse if you want to buy pizza. First you can go to some restaurants where you can drink a beer and have a good time while you are eating pizza. Second, you can go to the traditional and famous pizza places where you have the advantages of fast and good service. Lastly, pizza can choose to call for pizza delivery in not forty minutes or less or you can buy a pizza in less than two minutes using the drive-thru that some places offer.

If you are bored or you just want to have a good time with your friends, drink some beer, and watch sports, there are two places you can go. Eduardo's Pizza Wagon is an Italian-American restaurant where you have the chance to try real wood-fired pizzas, which makes this place different from other pizza establishments. Eduardo's offers you a great variety of pizzas, some other Italian dishes like pasta, and different kinds of drinks that will help you to have a good time. Another option with almost the same characteristics is Ebeneezer's Pizza Restaurant, which is also a wood-fired pizza place. People usually describe this place as a fancy pizza restaurant, which has a bar where you can have some good drinks. In these two places you have a good time and enjoy a good wood-fired pizza.

Pizza prices are always accessible and if you are a pizza lover but you also do not have money to go to restaurants every week, the following pizza restaurants are the solution. As any city in the United States, La Crosse has many famous pizza restaurants, all of them famous for good quality, great taste, and affordable prices. Pizza Hut, the biggest and most famous pizza name in the world is one of the options. This place usually offers a big variety of pizzas and combinations that satisfy your pizza cravings. Another big and famous world-class pizza restaurant is Dominos Pizza, which has almost the same prices as Pizza Hut and is the same kind of restaurant where the service is fast and good. You also have the chance to choose if you want to eat in or take out. These two places have almost the same price and the same characteristics but the most important is that they have a big menu where you can choose your favorite pizza or create your own with the same quality and taste that is offered anywhere on the planet.

If money and time is your problem, La Crosse offers you a solution. The city is full of college students, therefore there are a couple restaurants that offer cheap pizzas. Little Caesar's is a cheap and fast pizza place where you can find pizzas for five dollars, and they are ready to go so you do not even have to wait, just pay and go. The taste of Little Caesar's pizzas is not the best but they are still good to satisfy pizza lovers and the size is not bad. Another relatively cheap place is Jeff and Jim's where you can buy pizzas for relatively low cost. Most of the time this place has a two-for-one deal, which makes this place even better. Jeff and Jim's is one of the favorite pizza places for young people. The fact that it is located downtown and open late at night pleases the people who usually party and want to eat something before the night is over. These two places are a cheap alternative but, as we all know, cheap is not always the best.

It does not matter what the occasion is or how much you have in your pocket, La Crosse has good options for you to choose what kind of pizza to enjoy. The flavor is always going to be different and it's up to you to decide where to go. You do not have an excuse to ignore your cravings, especially if pizza is what you want.

An Exploration of Hypocrites

"You may know a person's face but not his heart" is a proverb that tells us to choose friends cautiously. Given that technology creates more convenient communication than before, it shrinks the time spent in connection and also breaks the limits of distance. Nowadays, even if there is a long distance between people, they can still communicate immediately. However, a problem also comes with highly developed communication. Human behaviors become more complicated, which confuses people on whether the speaker is sincere or hypocritical. People gradually get used to keeping some words without saying them, pretending to be another person, and masking themselves with a permanent "smile," eventually becoming hypocritical. To understand hypocrites, we should know how they got that way, why they continue to be that way, and why they are like liars.

A hypocrite is the product of social development. If there is only one person in the world, he would definitely not be a hypocrite because he doesn't need to care about any judgement. If there are two people in the word, the condition changes as they may interact as friends or enemies. However, both types require some communicative skills, like cooperating or negotiating. As a result, they must hide some information and may pretend to be friendly or have some advantages to make interactions go smoothly. Furthermore, if we extend the condition to the real world, which is comprised of numerous communities, people would be more likely to have more reasons to be hypocritical. Therefore, from the aforementioned, we can infer that hypocrites are people whose behaviors may contradict their personalities in order to socialize in the community.

The motives of hypocrites are based on benefits: what they can profit from and how to prevent a loss of those benefits. First of all, being a hypocrite can bring benefits because of their reputation. A good reputation makes celebrities more popular and gives them the ability to influence the public. In addition, media companies earn money by the number of listeners, readers, or viewers. As a result, talent agencies that create idols have developed since people have been using media more often. Nonetheless, do those stars behave genuinely? Actually their appearance and performance are designed to interest the audience, and advertising is the benefit they expect. Secondly, sometimes people present themselves hypocritically in order to maintain their benefits. One of my professors told me that humans, psychologically, also have a herd mentality that follows the direction of its community because it's more difficult to survive on one's own. Thus, even if people do not agree with a collective decision, they still pretend to comply with it. A well-known instance in Asia relies on Confucianism. If your superiors or colleagues invite you to a business lunch or dinner, you cannot refuse. Once you reject them, it also means that you are not one of them, and you will have less chance to be promoted.

A hypocrite is the personification of a lie. A good example is marriage. When people fall in love, they likely are hypocrites. From many divorce cases, most of them did not actually understand their lover's personality until one day when they feel something is different or they are not as loved as much as they were as the very beginning. Nevertheless, is it true? There is always no truth but a lie since everyone wants to be successful when they are going after someone. In fact, not only lovers but also they never change because they just disguise some of their true personalities and defects. Then, only after marriage or when they have been together longer, they will find the truth. Another example is politicians. Candidates always give the public a positive image when elections are coming. Also they usually tell lies about how their perfect policies can benefit people and improve the country. However, after they are elected, most of them are busy with accumulating their wealth and preparing for the next "harvest." So they still need to wear the good politician mask and tell more lies. The more beautiful lies they tell, the more votes they earn.

Almost all people are hypocrites. If you ask people whether they are hypocritical, the answer must be no because they are hiding their mendacious face. Today, perhaps to socialize or to benefit ourselves, we have many reasons to become hypocritical. People only show their good, their strength, and their false advantages to attract others. Therefore, we should open our eyes to scrutinize every relationship and never forget that "appearances always deceive."

Not Vegetables or Meat

As a personality, cheapskates still exist in our life. When I was young, I liked to read books, so I learned what a cheapskate was. A cheapskate is a kind of selfish person who just cares about his benefit. Its meaning can be found through two famous stories and my experience.

"The Merchant of Venice" by Shakespeare tells us a story about Antonio and Shylock. Antonio borrowed money from Shylock in order to help his friends, but Shylock got angry with him. At the end, Shylock wanted Antonio to cut his meat instead of paying more money. Shylock was a cheapskate because he was unfeeling as any wild beast. He didn't have any sympathy.

In Eugenie Grandet, author Balzac created a cheapskate who only cared about money. He didn't buy meat or vegetables all year round. He treated his only daughter as a trap to collect more money. Even Grandet watched and stroked his gold coins at midnight. Grandet was a slave to money; he lost his emotions. Try to imagine a mad person who was miserable even though Grandet himself could not.

A selfish person would never care about other people's feelings. My neighbor is very rich, but actually he drives a very old car. Although he owns a big company, he is demanding of his workers. His workers live in an ugly house, and they have few benefits. What's more, he is mean to his family. I never see his wife dress in beautiful clothes. His daughter always walks to school. What only concerns him is money. He aims at money, and everything else is less important.

From my point of view, all cheapskates have a very poor quality of life. They have lots of money, but they don't enjoy their lives. Basking in family life is relaxing, but cheapskates lack the kind of happiness. In the end, they will lose everything but their money.

Optimists

Is there anyone in the world who can be happy all the time? Optimists are the kind of people who treat danger like candy, who can comfort themselves easily when they get trapped into great sadness, and who can get over all their mental challenges. All kinds of difficulties will be a piece of cake when they meet an optimist. There are many kinds of optimists living in the world. No matter if it is fact or fiction, past or present, they decorate the world.

There is a famous Greek story about an optimist. Two frogs were caught by a snake, and they were already in its stomach. One frog was frightened to death. The other was an optimist, and he said to the coward, "Don't worry, buddy. It's a good place to live. It's warm and we have food." The coward was confused, "What are you saying? Where is the food?" "We are the food," said the optimist. The story contains irony, but there is no doubt that an optimist could treat danger like candy.

A friend of mine had a beautiful girlfriend after a lot of hard work to win her love. Unfortunately the relationship only lasted for one day. Most people would cry a river after losing such a wonderful dream, but my friend is an optimist. He said he had had an unforgettable experience in his life, and it was better than not having one at all. That's how an optimist thinks. That's how they get out of the traps of sadness.

Einstein is absolutely an optimist. A terrible fire damaged his lab where a magnitude of experiments. When others expressed their shocking exclamations about the loss of such great findings, Einstein gave them a simple smile. He admired the big fire that erased all of his mistakes and gave him a chance to make more progress. That's the great attitude of an optimist. Einstein got over his big challenge with a simple smile.

Optimists are happy all the time. They are normal people with some differences. They have wild minds. Their attitude teaches us how to treat difficulties and inspires us to improve ourselves. We may try to find optimists around us and try to feel what they think when they encounter difficulties. It is a good way to live happily.

My Major

Do you think international business is very popular in the world? Actually I think that is the main reason why I chose international business as my major. One reason is that many countries' businesses develop very fast. They need a lot of people who are good at business to help in their development. Secondly, international businesses can help people earn lots of money. Thirdly, international business can also make people think like economists.

There are many countries' businesses that are developing very fast, so they need a lot of people to join in their development. I would like to gain from that. In my hometown of Xiamen, our economy is increasing very quickly, but the government won't let the steps stop here. They still want to build more factories to help the city develop. On the other hand, now many people choose to trade with foreign companies because they could earn more money. That means people will have a better chance to develop economically if they are good at international business. Also, people could open their own business. If that is me, I will choose my business partners from other countries. For example, I believe I can make a lot of money if I could use my knowledge after a few years of practice. Third, I think international business could help me to better manage my business. If I have great knowledge about international business, I can have a hand in controlling my business in the best way possible.

International business could help people to earn lots of money. First, trade between different nations could really help people earn lots of money. Many economies are increasing quickly all over the world; international trade is unavoidable. If people are good at international business, they could earn lots of money. Second, if people are working in international companies, they could get paid well. For example, if people are working for Toyota, they could choose to work in different regional districts around the world. Someone from China like me could choose to work for the American district. Third, international business relates to stocks, in which one can make a lot of money. For example, if I am working for a company with a lot of stocks, I could use my knowledge to analyze them and know when it is good to buy and sell.

Finally, I think international business could help people think like economists. First, international business could change their thinking in different ways. People can learn that giving up something to get something later has its benefits. Second, people can develop a "special eye" on business, in which they know where they can earn more money. For example, people who are good at business know how to use their money. They usually see where they could put their money like buying real estate in a poor part of the country. Most people don't feel that it isn't profitable, but after a few years the government wants to develop that land, so it eventually becomes worth more than its cost. Also, the prices of real estate are increasing. and owners make a lot of money. Successful business men have this kind of "eye" on business; they know where to put their money.

Overall, I have given three ideas to explain why I want to major in international business. I think these days, it is a very good way to earn money. That is the reason international business is very popular, and that is why I am interested in it.

How UWL Exceeded My Expectations

Do you know where La Crosse is? If you don't know, what do you imagine about it? Is it big, convenient, or scary? La Crosse is in the state of Wisconsin. It is a small town with a famous university, the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse, which we call UWL. I wanted to study there, so I came to America in order to get a master's degree in education. However, my life at UWL is totally different from my expectations. Transportation, the people of La Crosse, and entertainment are different from what I expected in La Crosse.

First, I was surprised to find out that the public transportation is inconvenient in La Crosse. If one needs to go somewhere and doesn't have a car, he or she must take a bus. However, the buses only come every thirty minutes, and they only come once an hour on weekends. It is so inconvenient for me because I only have free time on the weekends to buy food and to go shopping. If I have to take time to wait for the bus, I am sure that I won't have enough time to do other things that are also important for me. Besides, the last bus also stops running very early on weekends. It stops around 7pm, so I cannot enjoy my weekends very much. I will worry about coming back to my dorm if I want to stay outside past 7pm.

Second, I also feel amazed that people are kinder here than in other countries I have been. Before I came to America, I thought that it maybe difficult to make friends because of my Asian face. However, when I first arrived, I met many Americans who were friendly and talked with me. Even if I walked along the street, they smiled at me and said hello. I feel so happy because I don't need to worry about making friends here. Besides, Americans are not the only kind people at UWL. I met many other people from different countries who are just as kind. Now, I'm taking a course in professional development for my master's degree in education. My international classmates always help me when I have problems with my homework. I really have a lot of great international friends now, and I enjoy my college life very much.

Third, it is a surprising thing for me to know there are a lot of activities in La Crosse, and they have exceeded my expectations. The television has taught me that Americans like to have parties and do many other interesting activities. However, it seems much more than I believed. When I just arrived here, I already joined many parties for birthdays, farewells, and just for fun. I gained many friends and learned about different cultures by joining these parties. They really taught me a lot from meeting different people. Moreover, the university also holds a lot of activities such as hikes, long-distance excursions, and picnics. It really gives me a lot of chances to understand Americans and their lifestyle.

To sum up, the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse is different from what I anticipated in terms of transportation, friendly people, and various activities. I think I cannot only savor my time with my friends and colleagues, but I can also gain a lot of knowledge here.

The Disadvantages of Living Off Campus

These days a booming number of students tend to live off campus. Mostly, they prefer to live alone than share a room with others. As an undergraduate student, I am renting an apartment off campus. Although renting an apartment has its conveniences, it also gives me some troubles, such as disputing bill payments, assigning housework, and worrying about security.

To lease an apartment off campus causes disputes among my roommates about paying the bills. For example, one of my roommates wastes electricity. He uses four times as much energy than the me and my other roommate. We decided to divide up the electricity bill in thirds at the beginning of each month. So angry were we that we sparked a passionate debate, and we did not get along well for days afterwards. Another example is that we wanted to catch the mouse that lived in our apartment. We were going to buy a mousetrap online, but one of my roommates didn't want to pay for it because he claimed that he didn't care about the mouse in the room. We ended up not buying the trap. As a result, we fed a crowd of mice.

In addition, sharing one room with other people confuses us on how to assign housework fairly between us. We have no right to urge the others to clean their own rooms, so an unpleasant smell always comes out into the shared room, which causes us to burst into anger. Another good point is that none of us likes to take care of the backyard behind our apartment. My roommates say that they do not have enough time to take care of it. Neither do it. We ended up with no grass in our backyard.

Last but not least, renting an apartment off campus leads us to face security issues. For instance, I parked my bike in the living room. For me, it's the best place to keep my bike. So surprised was I when I found that my bike was missing from our living room one day. Fortunately for us, the thief did not pose a great threat to our lives. On the other hand, I had to walk a long way to school. It was very dangerous for me. On the way to campus, I meet a great number of strangers, and I cross many intersections. I might be injured or even exposed to a life-threatening situation due to so many vehicles on the road.

To sum up, renting an apartment off campus has generated many issues that leave much to be desired. We must take proper action to improve the relationship between roommates, and also we ought to pay special attention to our safety.

Why I Am Interested in My Major

Is education important in one's life? If yes, then what should be one's major? Today in the world, there are so many fields of education from which one can choose. One's career depends upon one's interest. As every coin has two sides, different people have different opinions about choosing their career. It depends on one's interst in the subject. As Robert Frost said, "Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by." The less traveled road has more new experiences and adventures, but the road that is more traveled has footsteps that people follow, and it's boring for me. Recently I started studying biochemistry because my major is pharmacology. Having just started my college studies, my experiences and my future easily demonstrate my reason for choosing pharmacology.

First it's my field of interest, and I believe that one should only do things that make one happy in life. I was not inspired by anyone, but biochemistry, which includes pharmacology, interests me. It would probably take four to five years for me to graduate, and I am planning to pursue a master's degree in pharmacology.

Pharmacology is the study about medicine and its effect on the human body to cure various kinds of diseases. I want to do something for the world through my education. For example, I would like to help India, which has the world's second largest population. Because it is a developing country, it faces challenges with poverty, illness, pollution, and many other problems. There are so many diseases, which don't have any cures, such as cancer, AIDS, and strokes. I want to find some way to cure these ailments.

Secondly I was wondering, if scientists cannot find a cure, how can I? Where there is a will, there is a way. Even if I don't succeed, I will at least have tried to help humanity. For example, after being a pharmacist I can open a pharmacy where poor people can get medicine at lower costs. Today there are cures for asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer, but poor people cannot afford the medicine, and they ultimately die.

Last but not least, I can also perform research on people who will help the medicial field develop at a higher level. If I become a pharmacist, I can open a multinational pharmaceutical company that will help people to get medicine. For example, there are many pharmaceuticals and facilities in the world that cannot be found in some countries or regions. By opening such a company, I can help peole get medicine from all over the world.

Thus the advancement of pharmacy is developing within the next century and the future of the field is bright. I believe being a pharmacist is the best way to help people around the world.

Globalization

In contemporary society, our Earth is like a global village. With the development of technology, people can connect with others easily, and it promotes the connection between counties. Business also benefits from globalization. However it makes the world more complicated. Everyone fights for his own benefit. Globalization not only promotes the global economy but also frustrates it. The financial market, the labor market, and the product market are all affected by this trend.

Globalization gives the financial market a big surprise and brings the whole global finance together. Investors have more ways to invest their money, and it makes trading easier. Both sellers and buyers achieve benefit from it. However, if one country has a financial crisis, it will affect other countries, and if it is a big country, the effect will be greater. For example, between 1929 and 1933, we faced the most serious financial depression in history, which caused World War II and many other problems.

The labor market is also changing with globalization. It mobilizes the whole world's laborers work worldwide. Many kinds of people from various places get together to improve their own lives as well as the lives of others. However, some poor countries lose their skilled and talented workers to other countries, which causes rich countries to become richer more dynamic. In addition, some people lose their jobs in developed countries because their laborers are hired from other places because they work for less payment.

Under globalization, the product market changes at the same time. The whole world's products are traded together, which benefits developed and developing countries. Developing countries sell primary products and buy high-tech products from developed countries. Nevertheless, sometimes the trade is unfair to some developing countries because they are falling behind in technology. Moreover, trade barriers can also be found in some trades.

As we enjoy the advantages of globalization, we should also notice that there are some disadvantages that exist. The only way to live is to develop. If we want to protect ourselves, we should have great power other than having others pity us. In that case, globalization can be good for us. The world's trend is changing, and we must catch up with it.

The Pros and Cons of Euthanasia

Recently, I read an article from an international magazine discussing a very interesting topic, "Our Right to Die." The author makes an emotional appeal for legalizing euthanasia. She has been looking after her twelve year old son for five years since a doctor declared he was brain dead owing to a terrible car accident in 2002. However now she can no longer tolerate those chronic torments which she and her son encounter. Indeed her situation is really worth sympathizing but we can hear the opposite tone from religious groups because they have adequate reasons to support their position. Euthanasia, a highly controversial issue surrounding physician-assisted suicide and human rights, has been debated between advocates and protesters. There are some good and bad influences euthanasia can bring about.

First of all, human rights might be challenged. Supporters say, "Why don't we have the right to decide whether our own life is not worth living any longer?" and "Why can't our parents or relatives make this decision for us when we are probably enduring a severe physical or psychological injury?" Like the author's entreaty above, supporters all long for legalizing euthanasia because they believe that euthanasia allows people to die with dignity and it avoids needless suffering. Furthermore, they consider hospitals unable to continue providing satisfactory quality and treatment to sustain an ailment or injury that is untreatable. They may as well end patients' suffering to anticipate a miracle. In most countries, patients already have the right to refuse life-saving treatment. Therefore, many believe this same right should be extended to permit euthanasia.

On the other hand, anti-euthanasia activists argue that voluntary euthanasia leads to involuntary euthanasia because we cannot be sure of a patient's will to die if they are unconscious. In consequence, protesters are worried that people may be killed against their will by doctors. For example, the famous Jack "Dr. Death" Kevorkian furnished a person with the means to end his own life. At last, he was imprisoned due to being involved in several assisted suicides. After this monstrous event was exposed, some inferred that doctors would become numb to death and wouldn't do their best to save lives. In short, they think a doctors' calling is saving lives rather than assisting in suicide.

Moreover, today our society is still not able to construct a humane as well as scientific framework as to supply a perfect solution for euthanasia. For instance, choosing how to die, where to die and when to die can manifest the dignity, value, and comfort in our lives. Nonetheless harking back tow years to the period when my grandmother was laid up with intestinal cancer, she said, "I do not fear death but I fear the way death will come." At that time, I felt so sad and could not refrain from tears. Obviously she would like to die peacefully without any pain. Many people don't hope their lives will be completely in doctors' hands, especially after unconsciousness. Supporters argue most people cannot afford such a considerable medical service and many families end up in severe debt. Indirectly, it will cause partial medical resources to be wasted if patients only remain alive but there is not remedy to cure them.

Suffice it to say that based on supporters' and protester's arguments, they both agree life is valuable. In 1997, the state of Oregon legalized physician-assisted suicide. Afterwards, in 2002, euthanasia officially became legal in the Netherlands, making it the first country to approve euthanasia. Currently there are many countries debating whether or not to legalize euthanasia. I believe modern medicine can prolong life but this debate over euthanasia won't go away as long as it cannot do as much to maintain the quality of life.

Marketing and International Business as My Major

Nobody can picture the world without international business, especially the underdeveloped countries. For the United States, Latin America is the second "best friend" for business after Canada and Europe. The United States imports more than one thousand billion dollars of Latin American products per year. Since the Hispanic population in the United States is nearly 40 million people, now is a good time to increase the market of Hispanic products. There are different topics in international business that can help my business ideas to grow, like the massive number of Hispanics living on East Coast, who came to the United States to work but still have their roots in their home countries. Also there are passionate rules of international trade that I want to study.

I was in New York City just two months ago when I realized how big the Hispanic population in the United States was. I walked in some neighborhoods in New York, and I was shocked. It was almost the same as walking in any South American city. I saw several shops, restaurants, bars, and small businesses with a flag of some South American country on the door and words written in Spanish. Therefore this idea of bringing some products from Ecuador that can satisfy one or more needs of this huge population has been in my mind. Of course, the idea also made me very interested in how I can start this business.

Immigration nowadays is different compared to immigration a hundred years ago when people from Europe came to the United States. The European immigrants left everything behind, and it was hard to know what was happening back in Europe. Now it is different with telephones, the Internet, and television. People can know what is happening at the same time. That means these new waves of immigrants are better connected with their own people. Therefore any product that can remind them of their home country will be a success. My idea is to export some products from Ecuador that immigrants cannot find here in the United States.

Politics and trade between Ecuador and the United States are the main problems that I am going to face. This is something that I have to study deeply to avoid many problems. The United States is clear about their immigration laws. I have to focus my idea deeply in quality and completely satisfy the standards of the United States. For example, for any flower importation, the United States asks it to be one hundred percent free of bacteria or any other invasive element. Another example is the food market. There are many companies in Ecuador that can satisfy the American requirements. Some of them also have international awards for cleanliness, attractive packaging, good handling, freshness, and high quality raw materials.

Forty million people are a market that can be approached after thorough study of their needs. If in the future the products that I want to import are accepted by at least one percent of those forty million people, my broad idea of business will be a success.

A Comparison Between Keelung and La Crosse

Have you ever imagined what is similar and different between two places you've lived? I left my hometown, Keelung, Taiwan, for the first time to study for my master's degree in La Crosse. These different cities give me many impressions and bring me various viewpoints. I think that the differences between La Crosse and Keelung can be approached from several angles. Both of these places have similar and different public transportation systems, climate, and quiet environments. All of these give me a rewarding life in La Crosse and in Keelung.

First of all, Keelung has a much more convenient public transportation system than La Crosse. The public transportation system is very important in the city because people can easily use it at any time. For example, Keelung has many modes of public transport such as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), buses, trains, and many taxis which can be used without an appointment in advance. Several months ago, I wanted to go shopping with my friends in the evening. We had many ways to arrive at the department store, and we could take the MRT, a bus, or a taxi, so it was very convenient for us even until midnight. We could enjoy our time shopping without worrying about not have a personal vehicle to go home. On the contrary, La Crosse has a less public transportation system. For buses, taxis, and trains, appointments are required. For example, I went to the Valley View Mall with my classmates last weekend. We had to plan a schedule of buses in advance and write a shopping list before shopping. It reduced our enthusiasm for shopping because it was not convenient for us. Therefore, I think that Keelung has a much more convenient public transportation system than La Crosse.

Second, the weather is very different between Keelung and La Crosse. Keelung has warmer weather than La Crosse. I need to accept unexpected weather such as chilly days. For example, Keelung is in a subtropical zone, so all four seasons are also much warmer than those in La Crosse. Even though the season is cold in Keelung, the temperature is not under sixty degrees Fahrenheit. The humidity is not too dry, and the people look younger. On the contrary, La Crosse has a long snowing season in the winter, and I have to overcome the challenges of winter, such as going to classes while it snows. Because the snow sometimes melts, I can easily slip on it when it refreezes. Also, last winter was very dangerous because the ice and snow could easily cause traffic accidents. Hence, I think that Keelung has better weather than La Crosse.

Third, Keelung and La Crosse have similar living environments. These two cities have good public safety, and people abide by the law. For example, last year I discovered that the windows didn't have grills, and people did not lock the door when they went out because the city was very safe. Keelung has the same circumstances. In addition, police officers also patrol around every community frequently. Regarding mail delivery, the postal worker can put packages in front of the house, and no one would steal the packages. This situation is the same in Keelung. There are also few thefts in both cities. Consequently, I think that Keelung and La Crosse have a similar quiet and safe environment.

In summary, I think that Keelung and La Crosse has similar and different points, such as the public transportation system, the climate, and the environment. Although La Crosse has less public transportation, I will have much time to travel around this beautiful city. I can research and experience many amazing trips. Even though La Crosse has chilly weather in the winter, I can enjoy this unusual view of snow, which is like living in a Christmas card. Therefore, I firmly believe that Keelung and La Crosse have many similar and different circumstances, but both are good for one's lifestyle.
